I totes agree with her, guys.
I read/watch a lot of yaoi, I'm not ashamed to admit it.
And there's a definite discrepancy between good yaoi--nicely drawn, interesting characterization, good plot--and smut.
I does not appreciates those who think all yaoi is just "omg kawaii kawaii hot buttseks!"
Especially among the fanart/fiction crowd *shudder*
IMHO, a good yaoi is something like-
"The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese" by Mizushiro Setuna ([link])
Or, though it's a little silly and trite sometimes, the infamous Junjou Romantica.
If there's absolutely no stigma attached to the gay couple,
or if the uke is completely womanish and mostly indiscernible from an actual female, then you might as well be reading straight romance.
Anyway, that's just my two cents...
*goes off to read some more yaoi doujinshi and hopefully find another good series to glomp onto*

Hopefully, anyway. I like to say "shounen-ai," which is pretty much yaoi without any sex, a "clean" romance, if you will. But why does it always have to be about the stigma around the gay couple? I don't do "seme/uke" anymore because it's a sign of heteronormativity, but can't the gay couple have friends and family who are supportive? I'm not denying that homophobia is a thing, but if I'm going to be writing yaoi or shounen-ai, I want it to be about the love between the couple without them having to worry about being persecuted every moment of the day. One of the best parts of yaoi, though, is that you don't have to see the subjugation of women that is apparent in just about every other kind of dirty romance.
